Mapclash: sulle fratture e ricomposizioni degli «spazi cartografici» della geografia culturale
A partire dagli anni Ottanta, la critica della ragione cartografica ha acceso intensi dibattiti all’interno della geografia. Per molti geografi, le mappe costituiscono delle rappresentazioni riduttive e inerti dello spazio; per altri si tratta di pericolosi strumenti in grado di manipolare la percezione del territorio. Mentre le suddette interpretazioni richiedono un’attenta decostruzione del potere negativo e coercitivo che sottende la carta e i suoi apparati sociopolitici, una nuova ondata di studi promuove un’esplorazione creativa delle potenzialità del mapping. L’articolo esamina la posizione della mappa nella geografia culturale attraverso una peculiare chiave analitica: il mapclash. Il mapclash, letteralmente lo scontro sullo statuto della mappa, dischiude una teoria conflittuale che designa l’atto di rottura tra geografia e cartografia; enfatizza il gesto iconoclastico della distruzione della carta operato dai geografi nel corso del postmoderno; infine, coglie il cortocircuito generato dall’incontro fra l’approccio ermeneutico-decostruttivo e la contemporanea teoria cartografica, post-/non-rappresentazionale. Confrontando i diversi posizionamenti che emergono dallo scontro tra potestas e potentia, Mappa e mappe, rappresentazione ed evento, l’articolo propone di ragionare tanto sulle fratture quanto sulle possibili ricomposizioni di nuovi spazi cartografici per la geografia culturale.
Abstract: Mapclash: On the Fractures and Recompositions of Cultural Geography’s «Cartographic Spaces»
Since the 1980s, the critique of cartographic reason has sparked intense debate in geography. For many geographers, maps are reductive and inert representations of space; for others, they are dangerous tools that can manipulate the perception of the territory. While these interpretations demand a careful deconstruction of the negative and coercive power that underpins the map and its sociopolitical apparatuses, a new wave of studies promotes a creative exploration of mapping potentialities. The article examines the position of the map in cultural geography through a peculiar analytical key: the mapclash. The mapclash, literally the clash over the status of the map, opens up a conflictual theory that unfolds the act of rupture between geography and cartography; emphasizes the iconoclastic gesture of map destruction promoted by geographers during the postmodern season; finally, it grasps the short-circuit generated by the encounter between the hermeneutic-deconstructive approach and the contemporary post-/non-representational cartographic theory. By comparing the different positions emerging from the clash between potestas and potentia, Map and maps, representation and event, this article proposes to reason both on the fractures and the recompositions of new cartographic spaces for cultural geography.
Résumé: Mapclash : sur les fractures et recompositions des « espaces cartographiques » de la géographie culturelle
Depuis les années 1980, la critique de la raison cartographique a suscité d’intenses débats au sein de la géographie. Pour nombreux géographes, les cartes sont des représentations réductrices et inertes de l’espace; pour d’autres, elles sont des outils dangereux qui peuvent manipuler la perception du territoire. Bien que ces travaux nécessitent une déconstruction minutieuse du pouvoir négatif et coercitif qui sous-tend la carte et ses dispositifs sociopolitiques, une nouvelle vague d’études encourage une exploration créative du potentiel de la cartographie. L’article examine la position de la carte en géographie culturelle à l’aide d’une clé analytique particulière: le mapclash. Le mapclash, littéralement le choc sur le statut de la carte, ouvre une théorie conflictuelle qui désigne l’acte de rupture entre géographie et cartographie; il souligne le geste iconoclaste de destruction des cartes par les géographes pendant le postmoderne; enfin, il capture le court-circuit généré par la rencontre entre l’approche herméneutique-déconstructive et la théorie cartographique contemporaine, post-/non-représentationnelle. En comparant les différentes positions qui émergent de la confrontation entre potestas et potentia, Carte et cartes, représentation et événement, cet article propose de raisonner à la fois sur les fractures et recompositions de nouveaux espaces cartographiques pour la géographie culturelle.
