La regione dello Stretto: indagine per una territorialità transregionale
Tra la Calabria e la Sicilia troviamo una particolare regione antropica distesa sulle due sponde dello Stretto di Messina e chiusa dai Monti Peloritani e dall’Aspromonte. Come Lucio Gambi scrisse negli anni Sessanta, questa regione antropogeografica si caratterizza per il suo «ruolo di giuntura» piuttosto che per un peculiare dinamismo industriale. Il suo centro è la conurbazione di Messina-Reggio, un’area urbana di 450.000 abitanti divisa da un sottile braccio di mare. Il dibattito scientifico sul riordino amministrativo in Italia non poteva non prendere in considerazione l’ipotesi di una territorialità transregionale tra la Sicilia nord-orientale e la Calabria meridionale. Tuttavia, il graduale indebolimento dei flussi pendolari e l’assenza, negli ultimi anni, di una progettualità in comune rendono difficile tale ipotesi.
Abstract: The Straits of Messina: A Study for a Trans-territorial Region between Sicily and Calabria
In the South part of Italy, between Calabria and the island of Sicily, we find a particular region spread around the two shores of the Straits of Messina and closed by the Peloritani Mountains and Aspromonte. As Lucio Gambi wrote in the 1960s this anthropo-geographic region is typified by its «hinge function» rather than a manufacturing dynamism. Its core is the conurbation of Messina-Reggio, an urban area of about 450.000 inhabitants divided by a thin strip of sea. In recent years in Italy they have been thinking of a reorganisation of the regional structure, but currently we cannot suppose the creation of a trans-territorial region between Sicily and Calabria for the indifference of the local political classes who have never planned seriously a future in common.
