Abstract: Bring Context to the Interpretation of Empiric Data

The way locals and immigrants perceive each other has always been considered as a key factor in the integration process of foreigners. In the specific case of the Italian emigration, opinion surveys performed in Italy and their target destinations have become since 1946 the main tool to inquire about those perceptions. This article illustrates through a few examples how opinion surveys might be used to reinforce erratic hypothesis on the relationships between Italians and their host countries, should they not be interpreted in regards to the geographical and historical context.
