Identités culturelles sexuées et pratiques de l’espace public: exemple de la diaspora Mozabite immigrée à El Eulma (Algérie)

Abstract: Cultural sexual identities and public space practices

This article explores gender identities and codes, and their role in defi ning the use of the city and public space through the study of spatial practices by the Mozabites’ ethno-linguistic and religious diaspora in El Eulma, a northern Algerian city. Our attention has been particularly drawn to this community, which traditionally enforces a strict gender separation. We attempted to observe how the cultural gender identity determines the spatial practices. After a brief presentation of the Mozabite community and its capacity to appropriate collectively urban space, we will present, at first, the female and male spatial practices; then, the representations and perceptions that members of the community –males and females – have of the city accordingly.
