La Venezia notturna di Luigi Sugana (1891). Plasmare un’indagine geografica della notte urbana contemporanea con una guida storica
Assumendo una prospettiva interdisciplinare, l’analisi decostruisce la guida storica «Venezia notturna» (Sugana, 1891) tramite le lenti dei night studies e il concetto di nightscape. In accordo con le tematiche della guida, una breve genealogia ragionata dei night studies principalmente incentrata sugli studi dedicati all’economia della notte presenta i principali riferimenti teorici utilizzati in due successive sezioni complementari che, rispettivamente, raccolgono una serie di rilievi preliminari sulla notte urbana veneziana contemporanea e le note ricavate dalla lettura ravvicinata della guida. La giustapposizione delle riflessioni sviluppate nelle due sezioni complementari permette di individuare le linee di ricerca afferenti a tre macroaree di interesse interdipendenti e interconnesse – pratiche e luoghi dell’economia notturna, spazi vissuti della notte urbana e narrazioni notturne – che costituiscono il framework per un’indagine geografica della notte urbana contemporanea di Venezia.
Luigi Sugana’s «Venezia notturna» (1891). Shaping a Geographical Investigation of the Contemporary Urban Night with an Historical Guidebook
Adopting an interdisciplinary perspective, the analysis deconstructs the historical guidebook «Venezia notturna» (Sugana, 1891) via the lens of night studies and the concept of nightscape. In line with the core theme of the guidebook, a concise and topic-focused literature review of night studies mostly dedicated to the investigation of the night-time economy introduces the main theoretical references employed in the following two complementary sections. They collect, respectively, a series of preliminary observations on the contemporary urban night of Venice and the notes emerging from the close reading of the guidebook. The juxtaposition of the insights gathered in the complementary sections allows identifying research lines delving into three interdependent and interconnected macro-areas of interest – namely, practices and places of the night-time economy, lived spaces of the urban night, and nocturnal narratives – which provide the framework for a geographical investigation of the contemporary urban night in Venice.
