Carte di fortificazioni e cartografi nei teatri di guerra e nelle corti d’Europa tra Cinque e Seicento. Don Giovanni de’ Medici e i suoi collaboratori
La ricerca riguarda una raccolta di carte e vedute di fine XVI-inizio XVII secolo, conservata nell’Archivio di Stato di Firenze, relativa a centri fortificati, singole fortificazioni e teatri di guerra distribuiti in diverse parti d’Europa. Le figure, anonime e fino ad ora non attribuite, appartengono alle campagne militari e all’attività di ingegnere-architetto del figlio naturale del granduca di Toscana Cosimo I, don Giovanni de’ Medici. Egli partecipò a molte delle campagne che sconvolsero l’Europa in quel periodo, con qualificati collaboratori come Claudio Cogorano, Alessandro Pieroni e Gabriello Ughi. L’analisi storico-cartografica e l’inquadramento delle figure nel contesto europeo, contrassegnato da guerre di predominio politico e di religione, dimostrano un’ampia circolazione di prodotti cartografici, cartografi, idee e tecniche, relativamente a fortificazioni e centri fortificati; e relazioni fra teatri di guerra e Stati, non di rado committenti delle rappresentazioni.
Maps of Fortifications and Cartographers in the Theatres of War and the Courts of Europe between the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries. Don Giovanni de’ Medici and his Collaborators
The research concerns a collection of maps and views from the late 16th-early 17th century, preserved in the State Archives of Florence, relating to fortified centers, individual fortifications and theatres of war distributed throughout different parts of Europe. The figures, anonymous and so far unattributed, belonged to the military campaigns and activities of engineerarchitect Don Giovanni de’ Medici, the natural son of the Grand Duke of Tuscany Cosimo I. He participated in many of the campaigns that shook Europe at that time, with qualified collaborators such as Claudio Cogorano, Alessandro Pieroni, and Gabriello Ughi. The cartographic-historical analysis and framing of certain figures within a European context, marked by wars of political and religious dominance, demonstrate a wide circulation of cartographic products, cartographers, ideas and techniques, relative to fortifications and fortified centres and relations between theatres of war and states, which are not infrequently patrons of these representations.
