Topogenesi. Una lettura geografica di Butcher’s Crossing di J.E. Williams
Questo saggio prova a leggere con strumenti concettuali e metodologici delle discipline geografiche il romanzo di J.E. Williams. Sostengo la tesi che si manifesta qui una sensibilità letteraria per il «luogo» come specifica configurazione della territorialità, assente in altri celebrati romanzi dell’autore, come Stoner e Augustus. Il luogo, qui, non è indifferente ai fini della storia, della sua genesi e del suo svolgimento: diventa un «attante» cessando di essere un semplice «circostante». L’analisi richiama il ricco il filone del Western americano, sotto il profilo sia della produzione letteraria sia della critica. È in tale contesto che trova posto il tema della «topìa», ossia la qualità specifica e infungibile di un luogo, per cogliere la forma peculiarmente geografica del romanzo.
Abstract: Topogenesis. A geographical reading of Butcher’s Crossing by J.E. Williams
This paper analyses the novel by J.E. Williams using the conceptual and methodological tools of the geographical disciplines. I support the thesis that a literary sensitivity for «place» is manifested here as a specific configuration of territoriality, absent in other celebrated novels of the author, such as Stoner and Augustus. Here, place is not indifferent to the purposes of history, its genesis and its development: it becomes an «actant» by ceasing to be a simple «surrounding». The analysis recalls the rich American «Western» genre, from the point of view of both literary production and criticism. It is in this context that the theme of «topìa», the specific qualities of a place, is introduced to capture the singularly geographical form of the novel.
Résumé: Topogenèse. Une lecture géographique de Butcher’s Crossing par J.E. Williams
Cet article propose une lecture du roman de J.E. Williams conduite avec quelques instruments conceptuels et méthodologiques des disciplines géographiques. L’Auteur manifeste dans cet ouvrage une sensibilité littéraire pour le « lieu » comme configuration spécifique de la territorialité, sensibilité qui est presque totalement absente dans d’autres romans tels Stoner ou Augustus. Ici, le lieu n’est pas indifférent à la genèse et au déroulement de l’histoire : il devient un « actant » plutôt qu’un simple « circonstant ». L’analyse évoque la très riche thématique du « Western » américain, sous le profil aussi bien de la production que de la critique littéraire. Dans ce contexte, s’inscrit le thème de la « topie », à savoir la qualité spécifique d’un lieu, afin de saisir la péculière forme géographique du roman.
