Albert Smith e il Monte Bianco: la prima spettacolarizzazione delle Alpi
Il contributo propone un’indagine su Albert Smith, figura di spicco della cultura popolare della Londra vittoriana. Smith nel 1851 raggiunge la vetta del Monte Bianco e, tornato a Londra, trasforma la sua avventura in un libro e in uno spettacolo teatrale, andato in scena per 6 anni. Nel suo show, Smith riprende in forma di narrazione i suoi testi, ai quali aggiunge panorami mobili, diorami e scenografie. Smith è qui indagato come personaggio chiave nella storia del Monte Bianco per il passaggio nell’immaginario, da luogo del sublime romantico a destinazione turistica. Il contributo si propone di ricostruire il legame tra Smith e Monte Bianco attraverso una pluralità di prospettive, coniugando aspetti della ricerca più connessi ad un approccio letterario ed altri più legati alla relazione ampia tra geografia e letteratura.
Albert Smith and the Mont Blanc: the First Show of the Alps
This contribution presents a research on Albert Smith, author and leading figure in the popular culture of Victorian London in the mid-nineteenth century and his connection with the Mont Blanc, through his life and works. Smith reached the summit of the Mont Blanc in 1851. Back in London, he transformed his adventure into a book and into a show, staged every day for 6 years. Albert Smith is a key character in the passage into the imagination of the Mont Blanc, from a place of the sublime to a mass tourist destination. The paper aims at reconstructing the link between Smith and the Mont Blanc through a plurality of perspectives, combining aspects closely related to a literary approach and others linked to the geography of literature.
Albert Smith et le Mont Blanc : la première spectacularisation des Alpes
La contribution propose une enquête sur Albert Smith, une figure marquante de la culture populaire dans la ville de Londres à l’époque victorienne. En 1851, Smith atteint le sommet du Mont Blanc et, de retour à Londres, il transforme son aventure en un livre et une pièce de théâtre, qui sera mise en scène pendant six ans. Dans son spectacle, Smith reprend ses textes sous forme narrative, auxquels il ajoute des panoramas mobiles, des dioramas et des décors. Smith est ici investigué comme un personnage clé de l’histoire du Mont-Blanc, pour la transition dans l’imaginaire, d’un lieu du sublime romantique à une destination touristique. La contribution a pour objet la reconstruction du lien entre Smith et le Mont-Blanc à travers une pluralité de perspectives, combinant des aspects de la recherche plus liés à une approche littéraire et d’autres plus liés à la relation générale entre la géographie et la littérature.
