Un patrimonio storico-geografico per il Mezzogiorno d’Italia. L’Ateneo Federiciano e la biblioteca dell’Istituto di Geografia
A partire dal 1885 un ingente patrimonio cartografico, librario e fotografico si è stratificato nella biblioteca dell’ex Istituto di Geografia dell’Ateneo Federiciano, com’è testimoniato dai fascicoli d’inventario ancora oggi conservati nell’Istituto. Pur mantenendo un respiro sovranazionale, una particolare attenzione è stata dedicata all’acquisto di atlanti storici, dizionari geografici e altri volumi rari che, analizzati in una prospettiva integrata, consentono di ricostruire le dinamiche territoriali e paesaggistiche dell’Italia meridionale dalla fine del Settecento ad oggi. La produzione del Real Officio Topografico di Napoli è ben rappresentata all’interno del patrimonio cartografico bibliotecario, così come i resoconti di carattere descrittivo e censuario dedicati ai Borbone o ad illustri personalità del tempo. Di minor valore bibliofilo, ma ugualmente rilevanti sotto l’aspetto scientifico, sono le produzioni cartografiche e i fascicoli statistici della fase post-unitaria, i volumi monografici e le immagini che analizzano e fotografano i cambiamenti del Sud Italia a partire dal secondo dopoguerra. Il contributo si propone di evidenziare l’unicità di un patrimonio geografico sul Mezzogiorno d’Italia che non solo ha il pregio di essere particolarmente diversificato, ma è anche contraddistinto da una marcata continuità temporale. In tal senso, la biblioteca dell’ex Istituto di Geografia costituisce un unicum da tutelare e valorizzare a scala interregionale e nazionale.
Abstract: A Historical and Geographical Heritage for Southern Italy. The University of Naples «Federico II» and the Library of the Institute of Geography.
From 1885 onwards, a vast collection of maps, books and photographs was gradually built up in the library of the ex-Institute of Geography of the University of Naples «Federico II», as testified by the many folders in the inventory which the Institute still possesses. Although the collection has an international scope for the quality of maps and texts, particular emphasis was paid to acquiring historical atlases, geographical dictionaries, and other rare volumes. These geographical sources, taken together, make it possible to reconstruct the developments in the territory and landscape of southern Italy from the end of the eighteenth century to the present day. The production of the Real Officio Topografico di Napoli is well-represented in the library’s collections, as are reports of a descriptive and statistical nature dedicated to the Borbons or illustrious figures of the time. There are also maps and statistical folders dating from the post-unification era when territorial knowledge came together with the need to align topographic measurements and the collection of socio-economic data with the requirements of the new-born Kingdom of Italy. Less interesting for the bibliophile, but still important for the researcher, are the books and images which analyse and photograph the changes in southern Italy after the second world war. The article aims to highlight the uniqueness of a geographical heritage on Southern Italy that not only has the merit of being particularly wide-ranging but is also marked by an uninterrupted chronology of the entire area. In this sense, the library of the former Institute of Geography constitutes a unicum to be protected and enhanced on an interregional and national scale.
Résumé: Un patrimoine historique et géographique pour l’Italie méridionale. L’Université «Federico II» de Naples et la bibliothèque de l’Institut de Géographie.
Au sein de l’Université « Federico II » de Naples, la bibliothèque de l’Institut de Géographie rassemble un vaste patrimoine cartographique, littéraire et photographique depuis 1885, comme en témoignent les inventaires encore conservés à l’Institut. Les atlas historiques, les dictionnaires géographiques et autres livres rares constituent l’excellence de cette institution. Leur étude s’avère particulièrement importante dans une perspective d’analyse intégrée, car ils nous permettent de reconstruire la dynamique territoriale et les paysages du sud de l’Italie, de la fin du XVIIIe siècle à nos jours. La production de l’Office Royal Topographique de Naples est bien représentée au sein du patrimoine cartographique de la bibliothèque, qui compte également de nombreux rapports descriptifs et des recensements dédiés aux Bourbons et à d’autres personnalités historiques. La bibliothèque conserve également des cartes et de nombreux fichiers statistiques produits après l’Unité italienne, une époque où il devient particulièrement important de standardiser les relevés topographiques et la manière d’acquérir les données socio-économiques pour les besoins du tout jeune Royaume d’Italie. Les monographies et les images qui analysent et illustrent les changements dans le sud de l’Italie après 1945 sont certes d’une valeur bibliophile inférieure, mais restent tout aussi pertinents pour l’analyse scientifique. Cet article vise à mettre en évidence le caractère unique pour les études sur l’Italie méridionale, du patrimoine géographique et cartographique conservé dans la bibliothèque de l’Université « Federico II » de Naples. Son caractère particulier est déterminé à la fois par la nature très hétérogène de ses fonds, mais également par leur remarquable continuité temporelle. Pour toutes ces raisons, la conservation et la valorisation du patrimoine de cette institution s’avèrent fondamentales, tant à l’échelle interrégionale que nationale.
