Strumenti catalografici e repertori carto-bio-bibliografici: aspetti storici e nuovi scenari
Le possibilità offerte dalle sempre più evolute tecniche di digitalizzazione proficuamente impiegate anche alla riproduzione dei documenti storico-cartografici e la messa a punto di piattaforme informatiche che offrono possibilità di ricerca attraverso campi trasversali, superando potenzialmente la fase del riconoscimento dell’organizzazione e della struttura dei fondi archivistici, rendono necessario un ripensamento ed un adeguamento – o forse un superamento? – della schedatura analitica dei dati estrinseci del documento cartografico, resi leggibili dalla visualizzazione della riproduzione digitale. È proprio alla luce di tali nuovi scenari che appare necessario ribadire la considerazione che la carta storica sia da trattarsi come una fonte tutt’altro che autoesplicativa con un suo proprio linguaggio, con sue regole di decodificazione e con sue specifiche modalità di lettura ed interpretazione: le carte devono necessariamente essere interpretate in maniera filologicamente corretta prima di essere utilizzate come fonte storica. Paradossalmente tali sollecitazioni più che rendere obsoleto il tema della schedatura cartografica, aggiungono piuttosto nuovi spunti ad un dibattito già vivace in sede internazionale da alcuni anni, connettendolo a quello, altrettanto imperante, inerente la stesura di repertori carto-bibliografici.
Abstract: Catalographic Tools and Carto-bio-bibliographic Repertoires: Historical Aspects and Recent Trends
The advanced techniques of reproduction and digitization of historical-cartographic documents, and the Web’s ability to include visual imagery, thereby enhancing textual details, potentially exceed the phase of individuation and recognition of the map through the organization and structure of the archival funds. These scenarios, and the availability of some basic information through the visualization of the digital reproduction, make necessary to rethink and adapt – or perhaps overcome? – the analytical cataloging of the extrinsic data useful for the description of the maps and the tools necessary to provide access to them. New rules are useful to describe and catalogue early cartographic resources related to cartobibliographical works. However, it seems necessary to reaffirm the consideration that historical maps should be treated as a source far from a self-explaining with its own language, with its decoding rules and with its specific reading and interpretation modalities. Paradoxically, such requests, rather than making obsolete the theme of cartographic cataloging offer rather new reflections, connecting it to the other, equally imperative, inherent the drafting of repertoire cartobibliographic.

Les occasions offertes par les techniques de plus en plus avancées pour la reproduction de documents cartographiques et la capacité offerte par le Web de visualiser les images, et ainsi de compléter les informations fournies par le texte, obligent-ils à repenser la façon pour inventorier le document cartographique. Ces nouveaux scénarios obligent à confirmer la nécessité de traiter les vieilles cartes comme des ressources qu’il faut expliquer avec une intermédiation : le langage, les règles de construction des cartes doivent nécessairement être interprétées de manière philologiquement correcte avant de les utiliser comme source historique. Paradoxalement classifier les caractéristiques spécifiques des documents cartographiques et identifier les problèmes liés à leur interprétation sont thèmes pas du tout obsolètes, ma au contraire ils offrent plutôt une nouvelle réflexion à un débat déjà animé au niveau international depuis plusieurs années. Les cartobibliographies représentent en fait une partie importante de la base empirique nécessaire à toute étude historique.
