Abstract: Renewal and Functional Transformation of Urban Waterfronts: the Case of Genoa

After a survey of the literature and relevant scholarly debates, the paper analyses the functional transformations of Genoa’s waterfront which followed some major international events – the “Columbus Celebration” (1992), the “G8 Summit” (2001), and “Genoa European Capital of Culture” (2004). The following elements are examined: how signifcant productive sectors behaved; the material signs left on the environment in the regeneration process of the urban landscape; and the effects on the developing touristic identity of the city.
